Purpose:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Accounting Technician to join our team.
The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring accurate financial record-keeping and compliance, while supporting our mission to help farm families achieve their financial and retirement goals.
The Accounting Technician will assist with various public accounting tasks, including bookkeeping, personal tax returns, and other related duties.
Key Responsibilities:
The Tax Technician’s accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with the tax onboarding process for new clients, which involves assisting clients with CRA access, organizing internal files, utilizing the Karbon Software program, and completing additional tasks as assigned by the Tax Manager.
- Preparation of income tax returns for personal clients.
- Prepare and submit CRA reviews received by clients.
- Preparation of government remittance filings such as T4, T5, CDA elections and GST returns.
- Manage and organize client files, ensuring confidentiality and security of sensitive financial information.
Job Requirements Summary:
- Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- The In-depth Tax course is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Experience in a similar role, preferably in agriculture.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational and communication skills.
- Proactive problem-solving and process improvement mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.Bookkeeping functions for clients including posting of journal entries and updating client bookkeeping files.
- Tax planning intended to reduce overall incidence of income tax to both corporations and individual managers/shareholders Work with partners, and/or senior accountants to meet client filing deadlines.
- Develop and maintain client relationships; request necessary supporting documentation from clients for engagements and field questions any clients may have.
- Maintaining client files to ensure accurate and timely completion of returns and schedules.
- Stay up to date with changes in accounting regulations and tax laws, particularly related to the agricultural sector.
- Assist Tax Manager in advising clients on their current situation and provide relevant advice about the health of their operations.
- Research and apply various sections of the Income Tax Act to both the preparation of compliance tax returns and more in-depth re-organization transactions.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit including assistance as necessary with the wealth management financial planning department.
- Conduct internal bookkeeping duties for The Retiring Farmer. These tasks include invoicing, AR/AP payments and processing, reconciling credit cards, bank accounts, monthly vendors statements, post and maintain journal entries, quarter end and year-end financial statements, support year-end tax return preparation, employee expense requests and processing semi-monthly payroll
Qualifications:
- Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Proven experience as an Accounting Technician or in a similar role, preferably within an agricultural context.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and taxation laws.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with Karbon (not a requirement).
- Knowledge of farm government programs and the preparation of related applications including ability to complete accrual to cash conversions, and crop/livestock analytics.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with clients and team members.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving and process improvement.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
